Experiential learning fosters student empowerment
Books and indoor lessons are not the only way to learn. In fact, outdoor experiences bring history, geography, science and other school subjects to life. The hands-on and ‘real world’ aspects of experiential learning in nature means that abstract lessons become real. The outdoor classroom provides an opportunity to understand curriculum in a new, applied context.
Not only is this kind of learning extremely invaluable to expanding student knowledge, but it is fun and empowering. Students get to produce their own knowledge, rather than participate as mere consumers of knowledge. Students are actively engaging in their environment and making their voices heard. If students are allowed to take control of their learning, they find the pure enjoyment of education while experiencing increased self-esteem. Students are living what they are learning, and this process makes learning exciting.
Growth through challenge in Algonquin Park
Our Outdoor Education Programs are based on the understanding of the importance of experiential learning. The Outdoor Education Programs take lessons from the classroom and ground them in reality, making student curriculum more concrete. For example, students at the Algonquin Wilderness Education Centre can explore the beautiful northwest corner of Algonquin Park. They can experience the flora, fauna, geology, and natural history of the region firsthand. All of our activities prioritize student engagement to encourage self-directed learning.
This self-directed learning takes shape in the context of wilderness challenges. These challenges empower students to gain personal knowledge on their own terms as they overcome new difficulties. Students face hurdles outside, both physical and psychological, and these hurdles require students to draw from their classroom learning and apply their theoretical knowledge to overcome challenges. They will bring their new problem solving skills back to the classroom.
There is truly nothing comparable to the outdoor classroom. Give your students the learning experience of a lifetime by booking one of our Outdoor Education Programs, available year-round.0
